Apple just announced the iPhone 18 lineup, and if you make a living (or a side hustle) in front of the camera, you're probably wondering which one is actually worth your money. We went through the full spec sheet so you don't have to.

Short answer: the iPhone 18 Pro. The camera system is identical to the Pro Max, it's $200 AUD cheaper, and it fits in one hand for solo filming. Save the difference get yourself a Props Case and Hook V2 instead. Here's the full breakdown.

What creators actually need from a phone

Before we get into specs, it's worth separating what actually matters for shooting content from what Apple's marketing pages lead with. As creators, we care about:

  • Camera consistency (front and back) for talking-head and B-roll content
  • Battery life for full shoot days without hunting for a charger
  • Weight and grip for handheld and one-handed filming
  • Zoom range for versatility without extra lenses
  • Whether your existing case, mount and accessories still fit

Screen size and raw processing power matter less if you're not editing 4K timelines on the phone itself. Keep that in mind as we go through each model, because Apple's biggest headline upgrades this year aren't really creator upgrades.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: the camera is identical

This is the part most reviews are burying. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have the exact same camera system. Same 18MP front camera, same 3x48MP back array with variable aperture, same 5 optical zoom options, same A20 Pro chip.

Spec iPhone 18 Pro iPhone 18 Pro Max
Front camera 18MP 18MP
Back camera array 3 x 48MP, variable aperture 3 x 48MP, variable aperture
Optical zoom options 5 5
Processor A20 Pro A20 Pro
Battery (video playback) Up to 34 hours Up to 43 hours
Colours Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, Black Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, Black
Props Case support Supported at launch Supported at launch
Price From $2,099 AUD From $2,299 AUD
Release date September 18 September 18

The only real differences are screen size and battery. If you're filming long form content, streaming, or you just don't want to think about charging mid-shoot, the extra 9 hours of playback on the Pro Max is nice to have. But if you're shooting short-form for TikTok, Reels or Shorts, that's overkill, and the Pro's smaller footprint is genuinely easier to hold one-handed for a full day of filming.

Our take: unless you specifically need the bigger screen for monitoring or the longer battery for full-day shoots, the iPhone 18 Pro gets you the identical camera for $200 AUD less.

iPhone 18 Duo (the folding iPhone): not really built for creators

Apple's first proper folding iPhone lands October 23, and it's the most interesting phone in the lineup. It's also the one we'd steer most creators away from, at least for now.

Spec iPhone 18 Duo
Front camera 12MP
Back camera array 2 x 48MP
Optical zoom options 3
Processor A20 Pro
Battery (inner display, video playback) Up to 31 hours
Colours Star White, Night Sky
Props Case support Not yet
Price From $3,499 AUD
Release date October 23

Here's the problem for creators specifically: the Duo actually has a lesser camera system than the Pro line, despite being the most expensive phone Apple has ever released. Lower resolution front camera, fewer rear lenses, no true telephoto zoom, and it's $1,400 AUD more than the Pro. The fold mechanism is genuinely impressive tech, but if content creation is the primary use case, you're paying a premium for a worse camera and a form factor that isn't designed around one-handed filming or a quick kickstand setup.

We also don't have a Props Case for the Duo yet. Between the unique folding hinge and the fact that we haven't had one in our hands to design around, we're holding off until we can properly test fit and durability. If demand is there, we'll build a solution, but for now it's the one iPhone 18 we can't fully accessorise for launch day.

Do you need to upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max?

If you're already shooting on a 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, here's the honest answer: probably not yet. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max share the exact same dimensions as the 17 Pro and Pro Max (which is why our existing iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max Props Cases fit the new phones on day one). That carryover in body size, combined with the camera specs reading almost identically to what the 17 Pro line already shipped, means this year's Pro upgrade is mostly about battery and screen size rather than anything that changes how your content actually looks.

If your 17 Pro is still doing the job, this might be a cycle to sit out and save the money for gear that makes a bigger difference to your content, like a proper mount, better lighting or a mic. If you're still on an older iPhone (15 or earlier) or you're upgrading for the first time specifically to start creating content, the 18 Pro is a genuinely strong buy.

Full iPhone 18 lineup: pricing, colours and release dates

Model Release date Price (from) Colours
iPhone 18 Spring 2027 TBC TBC
iPhone 18 Pro September 18 $2,099 AUD Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, Black
iPhone 18 Pro Max September 18 $2,299 AUD Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, Black
iPhone 18 Duo October 23 $3,499 AUD Star White, Night Sky

Apple hasn't shared pricing or colourways for the standard iPhone 18 yet, and details are thin on the ground for a Spring 2027 release. We'll update this post as soon as more comes through.

Will your case and accessories still fit?

Good news if you're on the Pro or Pro Max: because the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max share dimensions with the 17 Pro and Pro Max, our current Props Case range and Hook V2 work with the new phones from day one. No need to wait on new tooling or a redesign.

The verdict

For most content creators, the iPhone 18 Pro is the pick. Identical camera to the Pro Max, easier to hold for solo filming, $200 AUD cheaper, and your existing Props gear fits straight away. Save the difference and put it toward a new case colourway or a Hook V2 for hands-free filming.

The Pro Max makes sense if screen size or all-day battery genuinely matters for how you shoot. The Duo is a fascinating piece of hardware, but between the smaller camera system and no case solution yet, we wouldn't call it a creator phone, at least not this generation. And if you're already on a 17 Pro or Pro Max, it's fair to sit this one out.

FAQ

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera better than the iPhone 18 Pro?
No. They share the exact same camera system: 18MP front camera, 3x48MP rear array with variable aperture, and 5 optical zoom options. The Pro Max only adds a bigger screen and longer battery life.

Will my iPhone 17 Pro case fit the iPhone 18 Pro?
Props Cases for the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max fit the 18 Pro and Pro Max, since Apple kept the same dimensions across both generations.

Is the iPhone 18 Duo good for content creation?
Not really, at least not as your main creator phone. It has a lower resolution front camera, fewer rear lenses and no true telephoto zoom compared to the Pro line, despite being the most expensive iPhone Apple has released.

When does the iPhone 18 Duo release in Australia?
October 23, starting from $3,499 AUD, in Star White or Night Sky.

Should I upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro to an iPhone 18 Pro?
If your 17 Pro is working well for your content, you can likely skip this generation. The camera specs read almost identically to last year's Pro line, and the phones share the same dimensions. The upgrade is more compelling if you're coming from an older or non-Pro iPhone.
